What Do You Know about Sleep Apnea?

Posted .

Did you know that about 90% of people with sleep apnea haven’t been diagnosed? If you have sleep apnea, one of the only ways to officially diagnose this condition is to have a sleep study performed. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to help you deal with sleep apnea—and Dr. Marla Wilson can help!

Sleep apnea happens when your airway gets obstructed while you’re sleeping. Often, either your tongue or muscles from the roof of your mouth block your airway. When this happens, your body will wake you up. You may end up waking up hundreds of times every night, which can lead to difficulty sleeping and trouble focusing during the day.

There are many different things you can do to cope with sleep apnea. For instance, you could find that a CPAP machine is the best option for you. However, Dr. Marla Wilson can offer you a few alternative options including a custom-made oral appliance. These appliances are typically considered quieter, easier to put on, easier to travel with, more comfortable, and easier to maintain than the CPAP machine.

At Premier Dental Care, we offer the Moses, EMA, Narval, Respire Pink Series, and UCLE Modified Herbst. The choice of oral appliance to be used for each patient is based on a variety of factors, including the severity of the apnea condition, your bite and jaw structure, size of the tongue and soft palate, presence of tooth clenching or grinding, jaw range of motion, health of teeth and gums, and more.
