Studies have shown that some brands of sour sweets are so acidic, they are nearly on the same level as battery acid. Naturally, this level of acidity can have extremely toxic effects on the health of your teeth and tooth enamel. Here are some important reminders about acidic foods:
– Even with foods that don’t have low pH levels, always wash your mouth out with water after eating in order to wash away food particles and plaque buildup.
– Saliva has been proven to effectively neutralize acids. A good saliva-producer would be chewing sugarless gums after meals to minimize the effects of harmful acids in your mouth.
– If you use a toothpaste after eating, it’s likely to cause more harm than good. The reason is because the materials in toothpaste are typically abrasive, and acids in your food can make your teeth extra sensitive.
– If possible, eliminate all acidic foods you can from your diet. This can include foods, snacks, drinks, and treats.
– If you eat any acidic foods, never consume them as snacks. If you eat acidic foods during large meals, the acids in the products have a better chance of being neutralized.
